Faces have always caught my attention. Genuinely surprised expressions are beautiful moments that when caught in an instant can be remembered forever. Gifts wrapped in beautiful papers that were done slowly and with care, then quickly torn and tossed aside in order to get to the surprise hidden inside. Considering what will only be enjoyed for the moment before being tossed in the trash, I visually take in the sights of people, objects and household environments.
I have captured these expressions by combining various materials with public sketches of costume designs on canvas. These are combined with unseen sketches of costume designs from within my sketch books. I have accumulated art books over the years of costume designs that were never made. Various mediums are used in my pieces, such as; tissue papers, acrylics, inks, watercolor, color pencils, oil pastels, and accents. The process of watching the colors of tissue papers blend into one another is what connects me to my piece. Each transformation is a pleasant surprise or pleasant accident. It is rare that I find myself disappointed in the process. The magic is seeing the artwork after it dries into its final state, the transformation is always a pleasing surprise.
It is my hope the viewer sees the complex process as they look at the blended layers tissue paper colors on the canvas, and to understand the delicateness of the combination of mediums that is used in the pieces. The mediums brought together on the canvas to be visually appealing to the viewer.
